If this is your first time travelling in Europe, we thought it might be a good shout to give you heads up that air-conditioning over here is not such a big thing yet. In this part of the world, history and character often take the centre stage over modern amenities like air-conditioning.
There is a quirky mix of reasons why your cozy room might not have the familiar refreshing breeze coming from the magic soothingly buzzing machine. It can be ancient architecture, protected buildings, silly city laws, eco-friendly practices or we just didn't get to that room with installing one just yet.
We recommend you do as Europeans do and embrace a more natural way to keep cool; grab a cold drink and explore the old-world charm!
That said, below are some details on air-conditioning (and heating which is definitely a no-brainer in any of our locations) situation in our hostels!
EU hostels details below:
Bruges hostel has:
- no air-conditioning
- fans in all private rooms and some dorm rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Bruges staff say: let us know if you need a fan and we'll do our best to accommodate your request!
Flying Pig Downtown hostel has:
- air-conditioning in all private double ensuite rooms and some dorms (32 bed dorm, 18 bed dorm; 16 bed dorm and 14 bed ensuite have A/C as well as some 8, 6 and 4 bed ensuite dorms)
- fans in all rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Downtown staff say: getting A/C installed in this old building takes some proper magic but we're working on it! If your room doesn't have an air-con, and the fan went missing, come see us and we'll hunt one down for you. If A/C is absolutely necessary to keep you happy reach out when you book and we'll do what we can depending on the lead time of the booking.
If you're staying in a private room, you are the master of the air-conditioning but please be gentle and help us be as sustainable as we can.
Flying Pig Uptown hostel has:
- air-conditioning in private twin and double, as well as 3, 6 and 14 bed dorm. Some 12, 10, 8, 6 and 4 bed dorms have them too
- fans some rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Uptown staff say: fans have a life of their own over here and they tend to move around so if you can't spot one in your room and there is definitely no air-con in your room, come see us and we'll get you sorted. Our charming (protected) building make the installation of the air-cons as complicated as the city does so bear with us.
Air-con is regulated centrally so let us know if the temperature is not to your liking but keep your roommates and our sustainability efforts in mind!
Winston hostel has:
- air-conditioning in some rooms such as the 10 bed pod dorm, 6 bed ensuite dorms and the double room with balcony
- fans in some rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Winston staff say: ask us about an upgrade to a room with an A/C - it's subject to availability so first come first serve, eh! If you're missing a fan, come see us at reception and we'll get you one!
Barcelona hostel has:
- air-conditioning in all rooms
- fans in some rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Barcelona staff say: air-con is regulated centrally so feel free to let us know if the temperature is not right. PS we also have a few fans lying around for emergencies!
Berlin Alexanderplatz hostel has:
- no air-conditioning
- fans in some rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Alexanderplatz staff say: let us know if you need a fan and we'll do our best to accommodate your request!
Berlin Mitte hostel has:
- no air-conditioning
- fans in all rooms
- heating for the cold winter nights
Mitte staff say: ask us about cool spots around the city to escape the heat!
Paris Canal hostel has:
- no air-conditioning or fans
- heating for the cold winter nights
Canal staff say: we're lucky that our building is surrounded by trees and water, try opening a window - it helps!
Paris Gare du Nord hostel has:
- portable air-conditioning in bigger dorms (10 beds and 8 beds)
- fans in some dorm rooms

Gare du Nord staff say: try opening a window or grab a bottle of fresh water during the hotter days.
Vienna hostel has:

Newquay staff say: who needs A/C when you have such a nice terrace with the fresh summer breeze and the beach right at our doorstep, right? Nevertheless, we have a few fans around the hostel so let us know if you need one!
